As engineering demands grow increasingly complex, the need for specialized equipment, innovative lifting technologies, and meticulous planning has become more critical than ever. Equipped with cutting-edge advancements, ultra-large cranes are redefining how we transport and position heavy loads, driving progress across the global energy, construction, and manufacturing sectors.

Pioneering Record-Breaking Land-Based Cranes

According to Crane & Transport Briefing, a division of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has announced plans to construct a land-based crane with a capacity of up to 14,000 tons, potentially the largest of its kind in the world. The project, led by Sinopec Heavy Lifting and Transportation Co., Ltd. (SHLTC), aims to introduce a groundbreaking crane designed and developed by Shanghai Offshore Petroleum Equipment Co., Ltd. This colossal truss-arm super heavy-lift crane is expected to handle significant lifting tasks in industrial chemical, nuclear, and marine engineering projects within China and beyond.
Construction is slated to begin in 2024, with testing projected to conclude by late 2026.

Advanced Collaboration for Unprecedented Lifting Power

As previously reported by Crane & Transport Briefing, Dutch heavy-lifting company Mammoet unveiled its SK6000 crane, hailed as the most powerful land-based crane in the world. A standout feature of the SK6000 is its robust rope winches, engineered by Liebherr. These winches, powered by Liebherr’s advanced drive technology, enable the SK6000 to achieve extraordinary lifting capabilities.

Offshore Heavy Lifting Innovations

Precision handling and transport of massive offshore structures, such as platforms, turbines, or subsea equipment, often require specialized vessels and sophisticated engineering solutions. Dutch offshore contractor Allseas recently succeeded in removing Shell UK’s Brent Charlie topside structure, weighing an astounding 31,000 tons, from the UK sector of the North Sea.

Power Lifting

Netherlands-based Heerema Marine Contractors has successfully installed its first monopile foundation for a wind turbine at the He Dreiht offshore wind farm. Currently, this wind farm is the largest operated by German energy provider EnBW, marking a significant milestone in renewable energy infrastructure.

Offshore Wind Farms

Maritime engineers at Seaqualize achieved another impressive feat by hoisting an 11-megawatt turbine onto Van Oord's offshore installation vessel Aeolus. This operation contributes to the realization of the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, setting a new benchmark in renewable energy deployment.
